From Creativity to Conservation: Protecting the Seabed and Beyond

About the project

71blue collaborates with Casa dei Pesci to protect the Tuscan coast in Italy. We aim to create a healthier, more resilient sea where marine life can flourish. 71blue works side by side with Casa dei Pesci to support their action for the protection of the seabed and their local ecosystems and species.

Our collaboration

We’re proud to partner with Casa dei Pesci, a visionary project that uses art, science, and community to protect the Tuscany coastline in Italy. Casa dei Pesci (literally “Fishes’s Home”) is actively restoring balance to the sea: from placing large stone blocks and marble sculptures on the seabed to prevent illegal trawling, to creating safe habitats like the Casa dei Polpi (“Octopus’s Home”), a refuge for marine life built with terracotta amphorae. Our collaboration is focused on strengthening their ability to scale these efforts, connect with wider audiences, and inspire deeper public engagement. Together, we’re turning creativity and care into lasting impact for our sea.

What is Casa dei Pesci?

Casa dei Pesci is an inspiring Association active on the Tuscan coast (Italy) that unites conservation, art, and community to restore marine life. Since 2012, it has protected the seabed of the Maremma by placing repopulation blocks and underwater sculptures that protect the seabed by preventing illegal bottom trawling and creating safe habitats for marine life. Moreover, through projects like the Casa dei Polpi, it offers shelter to vulnerable species, rebuilding balance on the seabed. By involving fishers, artists, schools, scientists, and local communities, Casa dei Pesci shows how collective action can bring the sea back to life and strengthen our connection to it.

Why does this matter?

The seabed is vital to the health of the ocean, it’s where countless marine species live, feed, and reproduce. It also plays a crucial role in maintaining clean water, producing oxygen, and, in this geographical area, supporting the growth of Posidonia oceanica, a seagrass species that captures carbon, stabilises the seabed, and provides shelter for marine life. But destructive fishing practices, like illegal bottom trawling, are tearing it apart and threatening this delicate balance. By collaborating with Casa dei Pesci, we’re helping to defend these underwater habitats, promote sustainable fishing, and give marine ecosystems the space and time they need to recover and thrive. Healthier seabeds mean more fish and marine life, clearer water, more oxygen, and stronger coastal resilience. Protecting the seabed means protecting the future of our sea.
